I remember one of those early music recommendation systems offered this up as something I might like.
I’d like to stress the “might”.
You went to one of these websites (for those of you mired in the mobile world, you can think of that as an ‘app’ on your phone). You’d type in names of the bands you liked (again, this was the pre-mobile world, so you used an actual keyboard, though thank god it wasn’t an actual typewriter, cause that would be pretty rough on your monitor (which were themselves these massive hunks of leaded glass and barely contained ionizing radiation pouring out of them straight into your eyes)).
Anyway, you’d give the site a list of your favorite bands, and they would have some fancy graph (the data structure, not a chart or something) that showed bands most similar to the ones you were so kind to input.
Now, Fishbone puts together some pretty enjoyable music. But if you’re looking for stuff similar to Ween, They Might Be Giants, Led Zeppelin, Frank Zappa, and Blue Oyster Cult, you would probably be a little let down once they served up Fishbone as the closest match to your preferences.
