Rust Never Sleeps
This album holds a special place in my heart.
The first bass line I ever learned to play (Into the Black) came from this one. I sucked at it, but hey, it felt cool, and had some real power behind it. I did the Hendrix trick, putting my heel up against the speaker of the amp to get even more distortion, because the tune demands it.
40 years later, I’m trying to play Out of the Blue on acoustic. I despair of ever getting the mastery Neil brings to it, but it’s something to aspire to.
Then there’s Powder Finger. Being an angsty 20 something when I started listening to this, it was really fitting with the year and the mood. Cynicism and depression followed each listen.
Welfare Mothers – I’ll let that one lie. NO ONE is ready for my backstory on that one. Let’s just say it brought out the sardonic side of me, and yeah, I paid for that pretty severely.
I thank Neil for this album, and Crazy Horse as well. You guys helped form me, for better or worse, and I’m happy with the way things turned out. Others may not be.
